Prescription Glasses Guide: How to Measure Your PD (Pupillary Distance)

👩🏽‍⚕️What Is PD (Pupillary Distance)?

PD, or Pupillary Distance, refers to the distance, measured in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils. This measurement is crucial as it determines the optimal point through which you view the world when looking through your glasses lenses. Accuracy in determining PD is of utmost importance.

Given that faces are not uniformly symmetrical, some individuals may have two distinct pupillary distances, a condition known as “Dual PD”. Dual PD represents the pupillary distance from the center of each pupil to the bridge of the nose. It is typically denoted in the following format: 32/30. Here, the first number corresponds to the measurement for the right eye.

🐼How to Measure Your PD?

👉Method 1: Using a Ruler

1.Find a well - lit area and sit in front of a mirror.

2.Hold a ruler horizontally against the bridge of your nose. Make sure the zero mark is on the inner edge of one pupil.

3. Look straight ahead into the mirror and measure the distance to the inner edge of the other pupil. This measurement is your monocular PD. To get your binocular PD, add the two monocular PDs together. For example, if the left monocular PD is 32mm and the right is 33mm, your binocular PD is 65mm.

👉Method 2: Using a PD Ruler (Available Online or at Optical Stores)

Step 1: Stand in front of a mirror approximately 8 inches away and hold the ruler against your brow.

Step 2: Hold the PD ruler over your eyes and close your right eye. Center the 0 over your left pupil.

Step 3: Close your left eye and open your right. The number you see over your right pupil is your PD.

Step 4: Repeat this process at least three times to ensure you have an accurate measurement.

👉Method 3: Visiting an Optometrist

The most accurate way to measure your PD is to visit an optometrist. They have specialized equipment and expertise to measure your PD precisely. During an eye exam, the optometrist will not only measure your PD but also ensure that your prescription is accurate for your vision needs.
